Alex Kiprotich Found Safe After Reported Abduction Along Gilgil–Nakuru Road

Senior editor at the Standard Group, Alex Kiprotich, has been found safe after he was allegedly abducted by armed men on Tuesday night while travelling along the Gilgil–Nakuru Road.

According to the Standard Group, Kiprotich, an Associate Editor, was found dumped near Masinga Dam approximately nine hours after he was allegedly seized.

The media organisation announced the incident on Tuesday evening, saying the journalist was waylaid shortly before 9:20 p.m. while travelling to Nakuru.

The circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation.

Standard Group Raises Concerns Over Targeted Attack

Standard Group Chief Executive Officer Chaacha Mwita strongly condemned the reported abduction and linked the incident to Kiprotich's investigative journalism.

Mwita said the organisation did not believe the timing of the incident was coincidental, noting that Kiprotich had been involved in editorial coverage scrutinising the conduct of the state.

According to the CEO, the incident bore the hallmarks of what the company described as a targeted attack against a journalist carrying out his professional duties.

The Standard Group has also raised concerns about possible state involvement, although such allegations have not been independently established.

Second Reported Incident in Months

The latest incident comes just over two months after Kiprotich was allegedly targeted in a separate incident in Nakuru.

On June 27, 2026, armed men travelling in a Toyota Probox allegedly attempted to seize Kiprotich as he drove to work.

Kiprotich reportedly escaped after locking his vehicle's doors and driving away.

The Standard Group says its internal investigations subsequently traced the vehicle to the National Police Service's Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau. The media organisation has further stated that no individual was held accountable over the alleged June incident.

The claims have heightened concerns over the safety of journalists and the circumstances surrounding attacks against members of the media.

Calls for Independent Investigation

The Standard Group has called for a prompt, transparent and independent investigation into both the latest reported abduction and the June incident.

The company has also called for guarantees for the safety of journalists across Kenya, citing constitutional protections for freedom of expression and media freedom under Articles 33 and 34 of the Constitution.

Mwita said the organisation considered the state responsible for Kiprotich's safety while he remained missing and called for accountability if any government involvement in the incident is established.

The Standard Group has urged human rights and oversight organisations, including the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA), the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR), the Law Society of Kenya (LSK), the Media Council of Kenya and the Committee to Protect Journalists, to join calls for answers.

Focus Turns to Investigation

With Kiprotich now reported safe, attention is expected to shift to establishing who was behind the alleged abduction, the motive for the attack and whether it was connected to his journalistic work.

The allegations involving state agencies also require independent verification before responsibility can be conclusively established.

The incident has nevertheless renewed concerns about the security of journalists in Kenya and the need for credible investigations whenever media workers are threatened, attacked or abducted.

The Standard Group has maintained that journalists must be able to carry out their work without intimidation and that any violation of media freedom should be investigated and addressed through the law.
