Netanyahu Says Iran’s Government Is ‘Within Reach’ of Being Overthrown

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has expressed confidence that Iran’s Islamic Republic could soon fall, saying the government in Tehran is weaker than ever as the United States resumes military strikes against Iran.

Speaking at an event with Israeli military leaders on Thursday, Netanyahu said Iran’s clerical government was struggling to survive and suggested that overthrowing the regime was now within reach.

“This regime is currently teetering. It is weaker than ever. It is fighting for its survival,” Netanyahu said.

“I am convinced that we can remove this threat once and for all — that is, to overthrow this regime. That is the central task that still lies ahead of us, but it is close. It is not impossible. It is within reach,” he added.

Renewed US-Iran Tensions

Netanyahu’s comments come amid renewed military confrontation between the United States and Iran.

The Israeli leader has for decades described Iran’s clerical government as an existential threat to Israel. In late February, Israel and the United States launched a joint attack on Iran, before US President Donald Trump called a ceasefire in April.

The United States has since increased economic pressure on Tehran and resumed strikes this week, prompting Iran to retaliate against US allies and targets in the Gulf, Jordan and Iraq’s autonomous Kurdistan region.

Iran has not, however, launched attacks against Israel during the latest escalation.

Netanyahu said he believed Iran’s decision not to strike Israel was deliberate and reflected Tehran’s assessment of Israel’s military capabilities.

“If they're not attacking us, it is not by chance. They attack everyone, but not us,” Netanyahu said.

“They know our power the strength of our arms and our determination.”

Netanyahu Faces Political Pressure

Netanyahu’s remarks come ahead of Israel’s October 27 general election, with some opinion polls showing him trailing his political rivals.

Opposition leaders have also accused the prime minister of failing to adequately address the Iranian threat, adding a domestic political dimension to the escalating confrontation between Israel, Iran and the United States.

Netanyahu’s declaration that regime change in Iran is now “within reach” represents a significant escalation in his stated objectives, moving beyond efforts to contain Iran’s nuclear and military capabilities toward the possibility of ending the Islamic Republic’s rule.

The comments are likely to face close scrutiny as the conflict develops and Israel moves toward its general election.
