TUK Student Dies After Falling Into Juja Quarry During Robbery Attack

Police in Juja Sub-County have launched a manhunt for four knife-wielding suspects following the death of Derrick Angwenyi Bundi, a 21-year-old third-year student at the Technical University of Kenya (TUK).

Bundi, also known as Omollo, died after reportedly falling into a 40-metre-deep abandoned quarry while attempting to escape a robbery attack in Juja South.

The incident has generated widespread concern on social media, with initial reports incorrectly identifying Bundi as a student at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT). Police reports have since clarified that he was a TUK student.

Students Ambushed While Filming Content

According to a police report filed under OB 11/01/09/2026 at Juja Farm Police Station, the incident occurred in a thicket at Kigwe Farm in Juja South, an isolated area characterised by abandoned quarries and located away from nearby settlements.

Police said Bundi had visited the area with friends for a content-shooting picnic.

The group included Daniel Mutie Kivuva, 22, Sunday Odhiambo, 23, Biphon Mobisa Ondimu, 21, a Kenyatta University student, and Ann Wanjiku, 19, a JKUAT student.

The group reportedly walked from Juja township, where they live, and arrived at the scenic but isolated location at approximately 4:30pm.

At around 6pm, while the students were filming digital content, four men allegedly emerged from the surrounding area armed with knives and ordered them to surrender their mobile phones.

Student Falls Into Abandoned Quarry

The attack reportedly triggered panic as the students attempted to escape into the surrounding bushes.

Three members of the group managed to flee, but Bundi reportedly fell from the edge of an unfenced quarry pit approximately 40 metres deep.

Police said he struck a rock at the bottom of the quarry and sustained severe head injuries and fractures to both legs. He died at the scene.

The attackers allegedly took a Samsung A16 mobile phone belonging to Wanjiku before fleeing into the thicket.

Bundi’s iPhone was reportedly recovered near his body, while Daniel Mutie sustained a sprained arm after falling during the escape.

Police Launch Manhunt

Juja Police Commander Isaac Kombo said a team comprising officers from the Sub-County Police Command, Juja Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) visited the location after receiving a report from a local resident.

Detectives processed the scene before recovering Bundi’s body under difficult conditions.

The body was subsequently transported to General Kago Morgue in Thika, where it is being preserved pending an autopsy.

Commander Kombo said the suspects had managed to escape before police arrived but detectives were pursuing multiple leads in an effort to identify and apprehend them.

He expressed confidence that arrests would be made as investigations continue.

Police Warn Over Isolated Areas

The incident has highlighted the security risks associated with abandoned and unfenced quarry sites, particularly in remote areas where residents and young people may visit for recreational activities or content creation.

Police investigations remain ongoing as detectives seek to establish the identities and whereabouts of the four suspects.

Authorities are also expected to examine the security conditions around the abandoned quarry as part of efforts to prevent similar incidents.

The death has meanwhile renewed calls for greater caution when visiting isolated areas, particularly locations with abandoned quarry pits and other potentially dangerous terrain.
