Police Clarify Viral Nairobi Robbery Video Is an Old Incident

The National Police Service (NPS) and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have clarified that a video circulating widely on social media showing a woman being violently robbed near Globe Roundabout in Nairobi does not depict a recent incident.

The footage resurfaced online and sparked public concern over security in the capital, particularly around Nairobi’s Central Business District.

The video shows a female pedestrian being confronted by suspected criminals who allegedly harassed her before taking her handbag and mobile phone.

Police Confirm Incident Happened in the Past

Central Police Station OCPD Patrick Gogo said investigators had traced the footage and established that the incident occurred some time ago.

According to Gogo, the robbery happened around the period when a political rally was being held in the nearby Nyamakima area.

He said police launched investigations immediately after the original incident was reported, leading to the identification, tracking and arrest of the suspects.

The clarification is intended to dispel claims circulating online suggesting that the robbery had occurred recently.

Stolen Items Recovered

DCI detectives also recovered the victim’s stolen mobile phone and handbag during the original investigation.

The successful recovery and arrests demonstrate that the incident had already been handled by law enforcement, contrary to the impression created by the recent circulation of the video.

Police have therefore urged members of the public to verify the date and circumstances surrounding viral security-related content before sharing it online.

Security Concerns Persist in Nairobi

The police clarification comes amid heightened public sensitivity over security in Nairobi, particularly following renewed discussions on social media about opportunistic crimes in the city.

While authorities have confirmed that the viral footage is old, police continue to encourage residents, visitors and businesses to remain alert and report suspected criminal activity promptly.

The NPS has urged members of the public to provide information about criminal incidents and suspected offenders as soon as possible to enable officers to respond quickly.

Authorities also cautioned against allowing old footage to create unnecessary panic or give a misleading impression of current security conditions.
